.INFO prices going up

As reported by Kevin Murphy at domainincite.com, "Afilias has notified ICANN that it plans to raise the maximum annual registration fee for a .info domain next year.

"The new price, which will come into effect July 1, 2011, will be $7.42. It’s been $6.75 since November 2008."

For those of you that require a bit more detail, this is the portion of the contract that allows registries to screw the registrant community on an ongoing basis:

Section 7.3. Pricing for Domain Name Registrations and Registry Services. (a) Pricing. From the Effective Date through six (6) months following the Effective Date, the price to ICANN-accredited registrars for new and renewal domain name registrations and for transferring a domain name registration from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another, shall not exceed a total fee of US$6.00 (the “Maximum Service Fee”). Commencing on 1 January 2007, the Maximum Service Fee charged during a calendar year for each annual increment of a new and renewal domain name registration and for transferring a domain name registration from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another, may not exceed the Maximum Service Fee during the preceding calendar year multiplied by 1.10.

Forget about pricing going down owing to economies of scale... thanks to ICANN the concept of year-after-year unwarranted price gouging has been placed on a pedestal and enshrined in gold.
